Pam Ferris has been absent from our screens in recent years as she enjoys a peaceful life in a quiet Kent village with her Notting Hill star husband.
The 73-year-old TV icon has delighted audiences young and old with her roles in films and shows over the last 50 years, and is perhaps best known for playing Miss Trunchbull in the 1996 big-screen version of Roald Dahl’s classic book, Matilda.
Pam also starred as the lovable Ma Larkin, opposite David Jason as her husband, in the ITV series The Darling Buds of May back in the 1990s, as well as roles in Where The Heart Is, and Rosemary & Thyme, in which she played a sleuth alongside Felicity Kendal.
She’s also starred in the sitcom Gavin & Stacey as Smithy’s mum, but her last regular TV role was in the BBC drama series Call The Midwife, playing Sister Evangelina on the show from 2012 to 2016.
Since then, she’s enjoyed bit parts and cameos in movies, such as the mystery comedy Holmes & Watson in 2018, and Tolkien in 2019.
But Pam has opted to step out of the spotlight briefly as she retreats to her cosy home in Elham, Kent, with her husband Roger Frost.
The actor, 73, has been married to Pam since 1986, after meeting at the Royal Court Theatre in London, and he’s best recognised for his role in Notting Hill.
Roger plays an annoying customer in the 1999 romantic comedy, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, and directed by Richard Curtis.
In the memorable scene, he visits William Thacker’s travel book shop, only to quiz the owner on a variety of non-fiction novels, being told countless times by Hugh’s character that it’s a travel bookshop.
Despite playing maternal figures during her lengthy career, Pam and Roger have never had children, and she has no regrets about her decision.
“I was obsessed with work in my youth. It's why I didn't get married until I was 38 and the reason I didn't have kids. Not having children isn't a sadness in my life, though. I know I wouldn't have been a half-bad mother, but that's what happened. There's no regretting it,” she told the Guardian in 2012.
The beloved actress is reportedly worth almost £3 million, and looking back on her glittering career, she discussed her time on the hit ITV show The Darling Buds of May, which ran from 1991 to 1993.
Pam, who also starred in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as Aunt Marge, spoke of her rift with co-star Catherine Zeta Jones, who played Mariette.
“Many years ago, I was invited to the premiere of one of her films - I think it was Zorro - but my car got stuck in terrible traffic. It was a royal premiere and you're not allowed to be late, so I had to miss it,” she told MailOnline .
“I've effectively been sending apology messages for nearly 15 years.”
