The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County confirmed a locally acquired case of dengue fever on Monday and issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory for the county.
Locally acquired is the operative phrase. Florida records dozens of travel-associated dengue cases each year in residents infected abroad. A locally acquired case means a mosquito in Palm Beach County bit an infected person, became infected itself, and then transmitted the virus to someone who had not traveled.
