Salwa Tibi, a Palestinian aid worker in her 50s, used to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with joy and festivity in Gaza City. However, this year, the ongoing military campaign by Israel has cast a shadow over the usual celebrations. Tibi expressed her sadness at not being able to mark the festival as before, as the conflict has made it difficult to find enough food, clothes, and shoes for her younger relatives.
Currently residing in a rented house in Rafah with over 20 relatives, including eight children and babies, Tibi highlighted the challenges faced by Palestinians in the region. The bombardment has forced many to flee their homes, leading to scarcity in market supplies and a drastic increase in food prices due to Israel's siege.
Tibi shared her struggles of affording only canned beans and hummus, with meat being a luxury due to its high cost. The situation in Gaza is described as lacking in safety, security, and marked by chaos and overcrowding. Tibi emphasized the current focus on survival and safety amidst the ongoing conflict.
Reflecting on past Eid celebrations filled with joy, delicious treats, trips to the sea, and quality time with family, Tibi expressed her sorrow at the impossibility of reliving those moments. The memories of happier times now serve as a painful reminder of the stark contrast in the current situation.
As the conflict continues to impact the lives of Palestinians in Gaza, Tibi's story sheds light on the harsh realities faced by many in the region. The hope for safety and survival remains paramount amidst the challenging circumstances, as families strive to navigate through the turmoil and uncertainty.
