A leading gas company has been lambasted for treating a Paisley neighbourhood with contempt after leaving a mound of rubbish on its open space.
The Scottish Gas Network (SGN) left rubble, traffic cones, signage, cables and old fencing strewn on the open space bordering Brediland Road and Mannering Road. None of it was fenced off from the public.
The organisation had been carrying out work on the gas network in Foxbar last month before leaving its debris on the street.
It was finally cleared after the Paisley Daily Express, Councillor Stephen Burns and Renfrewshire Council’s environmental taskforce raised the issue with SGN’s senior managers.
Councillor Burns, who lives in the area, said he had been inundated with complaints about the eyesore and a nationwide company that “should know better”.
The representative for Paisley Southwest said: “SGN has shown complete disregard for the people living in this area who have been living with this eyesore for over a week.
“At first, most people thought they would return to collect the waste but almost two weeks later there has been no sign of them. I have had a lot of complaints from residents who quite rightly should expect better from a company of this scale.
“Businesses such as SGN, who work in Renfrewshire communities day in and day out, should show greater respect for communities and the environment; indeed we would expect such companies to be leading by example.”
The company told the Paisley Daily Express it would take urgent action to remedy the situation.
Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN, said: “We always aim to restore any areas we’ve disturbed as quickly as possible after our projects are finished. We’ll revisit our site in Paisley to urgently remove anything left behind from our work.”
