Paisley bowling club raises thousands for cancer charity

A Paisley bowling club has raised money for a cancer charity following a race night.

Charleston Bowling Club raised over £2,500 for the Beatson Cancer Charity - an organisation that supports families and those diagnosed with cancer so they are never alone when battling the disease.

Brian Milton, a member of the bowling club, said: “The club does charity nights every single year. It has been supported well by the club whenever we do them.

"We have had various race nights over the years, minus when there was covid - there were no charity nights done then.

“This year, myself and another member, Craig Moore, decided we were going to organise the fundraising event. Thermal Fischer Scientific agreed to donate £500 for the cause.

"There are people in the club who are members who have had treatment at the Beatson. They were good enough to treat members of our fine institution and we wanted to give something back.

"If it was not for them, some of our members would not be here today."

There are normally fees to hire Charleston Bowling Club, but the club decided to waive all the fees as it was for a good cause.

Many donated expensive alcoholic drinks and gifts for the raffle as a massive thank you to the charity and all those who attended the night.

Brian added: “The support we got from the people that attended was fantastic. The people who had donated prizes for the raffle did not mess about. There were not cheap bottles of vodka that they were giving out. Saying ‘no’ was not an option. Local hotels and restaurants also contributed prizes to the raffle too.”

The club is looking to do more charity nights now that the restrictions are lifted.

Despite Brian and Craig’s involvement in sorting the event, Brian wants to make it clear that the club and all its members worked hard to arrange the night and make it the success that it was.

Brian said: “It is the club that donated the money to Beatson charity and the race night was done on behalf of all the members. The ladies, the men and the veterans were all responsible for making this night a success. Hopefully, next year, there will be another charity event.”
