A Townsville paedophile already in prison for his offending will spend another nine years behind bars for the abuse of his nephew and son.
A four-day District Court trial in Townsville heard the man, now 62, forced himself on his eight-year-old nephew and involved his son, also 8, in the abuse on two occasions in 1999.
The court heard the man raped his nephew on another occasion between 2002 and 2003 when the child was 12 years old.
After eight hours of deliberations a Townsville jury found the convicted paedophile guilty on 15 of 16 charges, which included five counts of rape.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
His nephew, now 32, told the court of how the abuse led him to substance abuse and to question his sexuality.
"I was ashamed of what happened to me," he said.
"I chose to turn to alcohol and high-risk activities to mask my pain.
"I had dark thoughts of suicide and got to a point where my mum, dad and partner were afraid of receiving a phone call to hear that I was dead.
"He had robbed me of a lot of things, but he can't hurt me anymore.
"The healing for me and my family starts today, thank you for giving me my voice back."
During the trial the prosecution explained to the jury that the offending took place on three occasions at the defendant's home in Townsville.
Each time the offending took place the child had been visiting his cousin for a sleepover.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Monique Sheppard told the jury both children were assaulted and forced into sexual acts in 1999.
However, the son of the defendant refused to provide a statement to police.
'Depraved and degrading'
Defence barrister Darin Honchin told the court that his client was a respected elder in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and that his health issues should be considered in sentencing.
During sentencing, Judge Leanne Clare told the man his offending was "depraved and degrading".
"The trauma robbed (your nephew) of a great deal of his own potential, she said.
"To his credit he was courageously determined to thrive.
"Your son has continued to protect you.
"You called him in your defence with the expectation that he would lie for you.
"I do not accept the submission that he was not a victim.
"You showed a callous indifference of their suffering for your own perverted pleasure."
Judge Clare also referred to offending by the 62-year-old between 1987 and 1994, when he sexually abused a girl from the age of nine.
At the time he held a position at a Townsville childcare organisation.
Judge Clare sentenced the man to nine years and eight months imprisonment.
That sentence will start when the 62-year-old completes his current six-year term.
No order was made for parole.
