A paedophile sent images of his private parts to a 13-year-old ‘boy’ and asked for naked images in return, a court has heard.
John Jackson, now 56, of Woodvale Road, Ainsdale, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday for nine offences relating to sexual offences between June 7 and July 14, 2021. Graham Pickavance, prosecuting, told the court that on June 1, 2021, Jackson, using the name Shaun J, began a conversation with a profile on messaging app Kik.
It was established early in the conversation that Jackson was then 54-years-old, and the account he was talking to was somebody claiming to be 13-years-old. That account was in fact an undercover police officer, operating under a false name.

Mr Pickavance said on June 7, 2021, Jackson asked the ‘boy’ if he was gay, and later asked to see him in the shower. Jackson also asked if the ‘boy’ peformed sex acts on himself, and requested he send pictures of himself.
On a later date, the ‘boy’ sent a picture of a 12-year-old wearing a t-shirt, and Jackson sent a picture of himself back. On June 14, Jackson asked the ‘boy’ to see him naked, and during the course of their conversations, he asked the boy to perform a sex act on himself.
Jackson described himself as “being involved with teens”, and said he “liked teen lads”, before claiming to have committed a sexual act with a young person. Two weeks later on July 14, the ‘boy’ sent a picture to Jackson of himself in a t-shirt, and the defendant asked for a naked picture of him. The next day, the issue was referred to the police, and Jackson was spoken to at his workplace, where he handed over his phone.
Mr Pickavance said: “The phone was searched, and showed he had been using the Kik platform to talk to underage children and adults.” Prohibited images of children were also found.
Jackson was interviewed by police and accepted responsibility for the conversations and to what was found on his phone. He pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause a child aged 13 to 15 to look at an image of sexual activity, attempting to cause or incite a boy aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity, and possessing an extreme pornographic image portraying an act of intercourse or oral sex with a dead or alive animal.
Jackson also pleaded guilty to one count of making three category A indecent images of a child, one count of making 14 category B indecent images of a child, one count of making 33 category C indecent images of a child, plus one count of possessing 50 indecent images of children, all between 17 May 2021, and November 9, 2021.
Callum Ross, defending, said his client showed extreme remorse and regret for his actions. He said: “He is horrified by his actions.
“He admits and accepts that he has a sexual interest in underage children, he knows what he has done is wrong and he wants help to tackle his issues.” Mr Ross added: “He knows that he has hurt a great many people a great deal.”
Mr Ross also said his client has completed the Stop It Now! Course ran by the Lucy Faithfull charity dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse. In sentencing, Judge David Aubrey KC said: “You took the decision because you have a sexual interest in children, to go onto what is described as the Kik application, so that you could communicate with other adults and children.
“And so it was that between June 7 and July 14, 2021, you were communicating with teenagers and thereafter exchanging photographs with them. “It is quite apparent you were doing so for sexual excitement and sexual arousal.”
Judge Aubrey said there was “no doubt” that Jackson had “some insight into your wrongdoing”, and that he was immature for his age. Jackson was sentenced to two years imprisonment, and a sexual harm prevention order was implemented for ten years.
Notification requirements will also apply for the same time period. At a previous hearing on January 18, Jackson told the judge “I’m not a bad person really.”
