Padraig Harrington forks out on beers for fans after lucrative win in USA

Padraig Harrington was the toast of the Phoenix Country Club over the weekend as he claimed his fourth PGA Champions Tour win and bought a steep round of drink for some fans he had inconvenienced.

The Dubliner made almost $1m with victory as the Charles Schwab Cup race came to a conclusion on Sunday night in the US but had kindly taken his wallet out midway through his third round to get the beers in.

The Irish man had asked a group of fans to move as their shadows were distracting him, but he eased the blow with a generous gift of $100 to spend.

"There was a bunch of guys who were sitting in the corner of the grandstand on 16, and the shadows late in the day were just coming across,” Harrington explained.

"They were moving. They wouldn’t know, so I needed them to move, which they’d been sitting there I assume all day waiting for this; I hope they were waiting for me all day. I got them to move.

"They still got a good view, but I did buy them a beer afterwards.

"I went in with $50 and then I kind of said, 'you'll probably only get a few beers for $50, I better go back with $100'."

The 51-year-old 51, capped a superb debut season by blitzing the field at Phoenix Country Club on Sunday, shooting a record-equalling 27-under par Tour Champions total to win by seven shots.

To have any chance of leapfrogging Kiwi Steven Alker into first place in the Charles Schwab Cup race, Harrington had to win in Arizona and he was a class above the field over the 72-hole event, finishing up with a six-under par 65.

Harrington pocketed a $500,000 bonus for finishing second in the season-long standings.

And, having earned €440,000 for winning Sunday's event, it was a hugely profitable week for the three-time major champion, who also added the US Senior Open title to his collection in 2022.

Harrington's earnings on the regular Tours this season comes to €371, 127 but, on the PGA Tour Champions he has amassed $3,564,424 in prize money having also been victorious in the DICK'S Sporting Goods and Ascension Charity Classic tournaments.
