Packers signing rookie OT Caleb Jones from practice squad

The Green Bay Packers are signing rookie offensive tackle Caleb Jones from the team’s practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson of PFN.

Jones, an undrafted free agent from Indiana, was one of the team’s best players during the preseason.

The rookie played 84 snaps at left tackle over three preseason games and allowed just one total pressure, per PFF. Jones (6-9, 370) graded out highly as both a pass protector and run blocker.

It’s unclear what the corresponding roster move will be, but linebacker Krys Barnes (ankle) will likely go on injured reserve at some point.

One note: The Packers already have 10 offensive linemen on the roster, so Jones would make it 11 if there’s not a move within the position group.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he thought Jones deserved a spot on the 53-man roster to start the year. It’s certainly possible another team agreed and wanted to sign Jones to the 53-man roster, but the Packers acted first to prevent losing the promising rookie.

Offensive tackles David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins were both inactive during Week 1 and could be out again in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. Adding Jones from the practice squad would add extra depth at offensive tackle.

More on the transaction, and the corresponding roster move, should be known later Tuesday.
