Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he suffered an injury to his ribs during both the second and third quarters on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Packers announced the injury as an oblique injury during the 40-33 loss.
The second aggravation to his ribs limited Rodgers enough that he had to come out of the game. He went back to the locker room for evaluation and scans and never returned to the field.
“Just having a hard time breathing and rotating my upper body, so I was worried about a punctured lung as well, so I wanted to get that checked out. Get a scan tomorrow,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers confirmed his lungs are fine but it was “hard to tell” if he broke ribs on the X-ray, and more scans will be required on Monday.
The problem was mostly a pain tolerance issue.
With the Packers now 4-8, will Rodgers shut it down? Don’t count on it quite yet.
“As long as I check out fine tomorrow, I’ll expect to play this weekend,” Rodgers said. “As long as I check out OK tomorrow. Might not be able to go Wednesday, but as long as there is no major structural damage, I’ll try to get back out there.”
The Packers play the Bears in Chicago next weekend.
On Sunday in Philadelphia, Rodgers completed 11 of 16 passes for 140 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
In terms of playing out the season, Rodgers said he wants to play as long as the Packers are still in the hunt.
“As long as we’re mathematically alive, I’d like to be out there,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers did say his broken thumb felt better this week than last week thanks to the mini-bye.
