Packers designate S Darnell Savage for return from injured reserve

The Green Bay Packers designated safety Darnell Savage for return from injured reserve to start Week 12. Although the Packers did not practice Monday, Savage was listed on the first injury report of the week as limited.

His return Monday opens up a 21-day window for Savage to practice without counting against the 53-man roster, but he must be activated to the roster before playing again.

Savage has missed the last four games — against the Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers — after injuring his calf in Denver against the Broncos on Oct. 22. He started the first six games of the season and was on the field for 83 percent of the defense’s snaps.

Without Savage and Rudy Ford (calf, biceps) in recent weeks, the Packers started Jonathan Owens and rookie Anthony Johnson Jr. at safety.

The Packers have a short week before playing the Detroit Lions on Thursday at Ford Field. It’s unclear if Savage will be healthy enough to play in Week 12. The Packers get the weekend off before hosting the Kansas City Chiefs in primetime in Week 13.
