Packers add quality control assistant to special teams staff

The Green Bay Packers are adding another staff member to assist Rich Bisaccia’s special teams.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers hired Michael Spurlock as a quality control assistant on special teams.

Spurlock, who played nine seasons in the NFL, returned 107 kickoffs and 81 punts during his career. He produced five total return touchdowns; two on punts and three on kickoffs.

In 2007, Spurlock became the first player in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to return a kickoff for a touchdown. His coordinator that season? Bisaccia.

In fact, Bisaccia coordinated Spurlock in Tampa Bay during the 2007, 2008 and 2010 seasons. In 2012, he joined Bisaccia in San Diego with the Chargers. That season, he returned another kickoff for a score.

Spurlock, 39, has been coaching at various levels of football since 2015, including four different seasons coaching special teams. During the last two seasons, he was a senior player personnel analyst at Ole Miss, his alma mater.

The Packers hired Bisaccia to replace Maurice Drayton after a disastrous season on special teams. Bisaccia brought assistant Byron Storer with him from Las Vegas to Green Bay, and Rayna Stewart remains listed on the team’s coaching staff as a special teams assistant.

Spurlock could help Bisaccia develop returners for the Packers. The team had rookies Kylin Hill and Amari Rodgers in the roles during the 2021 season, but neither was effective.

The Packers also hired Quinshon Odom as the newest coach in the minority assistant coaching fellowship.
