Packed programme of events gets underway in run up to Lanarkshire Gala Day

The countdown is on to the start of Strathaven Gala week, as the biggest event in the town’s calendar returns after an enforced two-year absence due to Covid.

A packed programme of events gets under way this weekend, building up to the Gala Day on Saturday, June 11.

Proceedings kick-off with the Gala quiz 7pm for 7.30pm The Town Mill tomorrow night, Friday, June 3.

This year’s full-colour Gala programmes are now on sale with details of everything happening during Gala week, leading up to the crowning of 2022 Gala Queen Jenna Archell-Lamb, accompanied by her Champion Logan Kemp.

Entertainment gets under way from 10am in the Common Green with music from Joan Patrick and friends.

The parade will assemble in the Sainsbury's car park from 11am, with judging for the parade entries, fancy dress, and floats from 11.20am.

The parade sets off around the town at 12noon, arriving at the park at 1.30pm ahead for the crowning ceremony at the bandstand.

Throughout the afternoon there will be stalls, entertainment and music in the John Hastie Park, with M&D's funfair in the top car park of the George Allan Park all day – and the model railway will be open too.

You can buy a programme from Craigs Newsagent, McColls and Strathaven Library, and they will also be on sale from 8.30am in the Common Green, and from 10.30am at Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Ducks for the Gala Duck race are also available from Craigs, and from the programme stalls – you can also sponsor a duck before the race on Monday, June 6 at the bandstand in the George Allan Park.

On Sunday, June 5 over 50 teams will be making a splash to start Gala week by taking part in the raft race at Craig Bridge, first race getting under way at 12.30pm.

Enjoy watching the action, and join the Round Table for a BBQ across the road at the Strathaven Ales brewery.

The children’s canoe races are in the pond in the park on Monday, June 6 from 6.30pm, followed by one of the highlights of Gala week, the duck race.

You can find full details of all the Gala events in the festival programme.
