Pablo Zabaleta believes that compatriot Enzo Fernandez is destined to join one of the top clubs in European football, after announcing his arrival with a brilliant goal at the World Cup in Qatar.
Argentina found themselves struggling to break down a stubborn Mexico side before talisman Lionel Messi broke the deadlock with a trademark left-foot finish in the 64th minute. But the victory was sealed three minutes from time by the brilliance of substitute Fernandez, who showed off some lightning-quick footwork before cutting inside and curling the ball home from inside the penalty area.
Liverpool have already been linked with a move for the 21-year-old, who only joined Benfica from River Plate in the summer for what now looks like a bargain €18million including add-ons. The midfielder is believed to now have a hefty release clause built into his contract, but regardless of that former Argentine international Zabaleta is in no doubt that his fellow countryman is on course to join a football super-power.

Speaking on BBC Sport's LIVE World Cup coverage, Zabaleta said: "He’s been outstanding for Benfica this season. Remember this guy, I’m sure next summer he’ll go to some of the biggest club in Europe for sure. I think [Lionel] Scaloni made a smart choice bringing him in as he completely changed the game, took control of the ball and he was a player that was not afraid to play, to bring the ball forward and he scored a beautiful goal as we can see.
"Really really good player, he’s only 21, he’s really young, does have great potential."
Zabaleta knows plenty about what it takes to be successful at a top European club. The right-back spent nine seasons at Manchester City, making 333 appearances and winning two Premier League titles.
