P&O Cruises delays launch of highly-anticipated new cruise ship Arvia

The highly anticipated launch of a new P&O Cruises ship has been delayed, meaning early guests will miss out.

Customers have been left gutted after learning that the Arvia's maiden voyage has been pushed back by two weeks because the ship isn't ready.

The company delayed Arvia’s maiden voyage due to “reasons beyond our control” it said in a statement, adding that it won't compromise on the quality of the ship to get it sailing sooner.

The 5,200-passenger Excel-class ship was slated to launch on December 9, but it will now take its maiden voyage on December 23.

The inaugural sailing will include ports of call in Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands, before the ship repositioning to the Caribbean in January.

The company released the first images of the ship less than three weeks ago along with confirmed dates for voyages.

A P&O Cruises spokesperson said: “For reasons beyond our control, we have regrettably cancelled Arvia’s first cruise on 9 December 2022. Arvia’s first sailing will now be 23 December 2022.

"Whilst we know this is disappointing, we will not compromise on our high standards of build, interior design and service."

Arvia is one of the exciting new cruise ships for 2022

Boasting a gross tonnage of 184,700, the ship will offer over 20 restaurants, a huge pool, and the SkyDome area with a retractable roof. SkyDome will serve as a pool by day, but come nighttime it will double up as an entertainment venue hosting everything from aerial performances to theatre shows.

Thrill-seekers will also be spoiled for choice with activities courtesy of the sports arena, minigolf course, and even an 'Altitude Skywalk', a high ropes experience above the ship's top deck that's definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Arvia is the sister ship of Iona, which successfully launched last year.

While the two ships are the same size and have the same layout, the newer version also has an escape room, men's grooming, experiential shopping and new spa experiences.

Other highlights will include 26 dining rooms and bars, five theatres and lounges, and six pools.

For those who are eyeing up a Caribbean cruise this winter, the company currently has sailings from £949 for a 14-night holiday sailing from Southampton to Barbados.
