Oxlade-Chamberlain, Matip, Thiago - Liverpool injury latest and expected return dates

Liverpool head into the weekend in high spirits following their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat of Arsenal on Thursday night, meaning they reached next month’s final at Wembley.

And now they prepare to face Crystal Palace on Sunday, as they aim for back-to-back victories in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp has one fresh injury concern ahead of the contest, with Joel Matip coming off at half-time against the Gunners through injury during the 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium in midweek.

However, the Reds are expected to remain without seven of their players for the contest at Selhurst Park, meaning Klopp will have to stretch his resources once again.

Here is the current state of play at Anfield and the expected return dates for those currently out injured.

Do Liverpool need any new signings in the January transfer window? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been nursing an ankle injury he sustained in last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Brentford at Anfield.

The 28-year-old rolled his ankle during that clash with the Bees and subsequently missed Thursday’s trip to Arsenal, although it was expected he would be available for Sunday’s game with Crystal Palace.

However, it has been revealed that his injury may have been misdiagnosed as there is a suspected fracture on his ankle, and so there remains a question mark over his availability this weekend.

Joel Matip

Joel Matip is a fresh injury concern for Klopp after the defender was withdrawn at half time in midweek through injury.

The centre back has picked up an unspecified knock, which could potentially rule him out of this weekend against the Eagles.

Following the Arsenal game, Klopp said: "We thought something was not 100 per cent right, and we have Ibu (Ibrahima Konate) and Joe (Gomez) on the bench, so it's just that we change it."

Thiago

Spanish midfielder Thiago will remain out until after the upcoming international break as he recovers from a groin injury.

Thiago has been missing since suffering a hip injury following the December 16 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield.

On Wednesday, Klopp said: “Hopefully, he will be in full team training after the international break, to prepare for the Cardiff game."

Harvey Elliott

Youngster Harvey Elliott continues his impressive comeback from injury and is expected to return to the Liverpool squad earlier than expected.

The midfielder suffered a horrific nasty ankle injury in the September victory over Leeds but has already returned to training in recent times.

Ahead of the Arsenal game, Klopp said: “He hasn't lost his football brain. It would be a crime not to play him [but] we'll take our time. He needs to get 'team fit'. It's great to have him back."

Divock Origi

Divock Origi continues to be sidelined with a knee injury he sustained last month and hasn’t featured for the Reds since scoring in the 2-1 Champions League victory at AC Milan on December 7.

However, there has been promising developments for the Belgian striker and he is also expected to make a return to action following next month's international break.

On January 14, Klopp revealed: “Yesterday, he was outside running and looked really good, so I think he will not be too far away."

Nathaniel Phillips

Defender Nathaniel Phillips is getting nearer to a return to action after fracturing his cheekbone at the start of December in the Champions League victory against AC Milan.

It was initially thought that he would be back at some point in January, although that has now been pushed back to next month.

But Klopp has revealed that he won’t be rushed back, which would explain why Phillips hasn’t been involved in any recent matchday squads.

Africa Cup of Nations absentees

The following players will continue to be unavailable for the Reds as they compete for their countries at AFCON 2021.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt)

Sadio Mane (Senegal)

Naby Keita (Guinea)
