Oxford United new boy Ciaron Brown credits Gavin Whyte for 'bigging up' Deadline move

Ciaron Brown has revealed how Northern Ireland teammate Gavin Whyte played a key role in him making a Deadline Day loan move to Oxford United.

The left-sided defender, who has been capped seven times at international level, has swapped Cardiff City for The U’s until the end of the season.

And he has former Crusaders star Whyte, also currently on loan at Oxford from Cardiff, to thank for bigging up the League One club who are currently chasing promotion to the Championship.

The 24-year-old, who has enjoyed two loan spells at Livingstone during his time at Cardiff, said: “I obviously spoke to Gav and he just said ‘get yourself down here!’

“He told me how excited I’d be when I’m here and I’d enjoy it. I also spoke to (former Oxford defender) Curtis Nelson and they had nothing but good things to say about the club.

“I’m just excited to be here and when I got the call I was over the moon.”

Oxford boss Karl Robinson said: “Ciaron fits the bill nicely for us. He is tall, he’s powerful, reads the game well and he can play in a couple of positions.”

Brown, who joined Cardiff from Wealdstone in 2018, signed for Oxford on the same day as Oisin Smyth completed his move to the Kassam Stadium from Dungannon Swifts.
