Workers were evacuated from an Oxford Street building and roads closed as a fire broke out on Monday evening.
London Fire Brigade advised people to avoid the area while flames are dampened.
The blaze is believed to have started in the basement of a construction site near to John Lewis’s flagship department store.

BBC journalist Chi Chi Izundu posted on Twitter “lots of smoke” could be seen at 4pm.
She wrote in a Twitter post: “Outside the old department store next to John Lewis behind Oxford Street. Loads of workmen evacuated and lots of smoke.”

LFB tweeted: “Firefighters are dealing with a fire in the basement of a construction site on Oxford Street. Please avoid the area if possible.”
