Owner locks alleged syringe-wielding carjacker inside Porsche, calls police

Emergency services were called to Perkins Street in Newcastle on November 8.

AN ALLEGED carjacker armed with a syringe has been arrested after the owner of the Porsche managed to lock him inside and call police from the safety of the street.

Emergency services were called to Perkins Street in Newcastle at about 7.30am on Friday, November 8, to reports of an attempted robbery.

Police at the scene were told that a man was standing near his Porsche when he was approached by an unknown man.

The stranger allegedly demanded the keys to the black SUV while armed with a syringe.

The owner of the vehicle moved away while the man allegedly got into the driver's seat and attempted to start the car.

The alleged victim was still holding onto the keys and managed to lock his assailant inside the Porsche while he called police.

Newcastle police rushed to the scene and a brief struggle broke out before the man was safely arrested.

Police allege the same man, a 25-year-old, had attempted to enter a woman's vehicle just a short time earlier.

Officers searched the man's possessions and allegedly uncovered an amount of methamphetamine as well as ID and bank cards police believe were stolen.

The 25-year-old man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with seven allegations, including aggravated assault with intent to take or drive motor vehicle while armed with a weapon.

He was also charged with stalking or intimidating, entering a vehicle without consent, assaulting a police officer, hindering or resisting police, having goods in custody suspected of being stolen, and possessing a prohibited drug.

The man was refused bail to front Parramatta Local Court for an out-of-sessions hearing on November 9, where he was remanded in custody and ordered to face Newcastle Local Court later this month.
