The controversy began after posts from the event circulated on social media. The photos show a large group of students seated inside a gymnasium, while another image shows a student speaking from a stage carrying Club America branding.
Owens responded to a post celebrating the turnout and questioned whether students had a choice about attending. She wrote:
“The students were forced to attend this event as a school assembly. They could not opt out.
The parents were informed they were not allowed to attend alongside with them.
It is insane to me that you have administrations forcing events on underage kids and then are trying to spin it to the public as successful club growth.”
