Owen Hargreaves makes Manchester United title admission ahead of derby clash

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes it is possible the Reds can win the Premier League title this season, but admitted that a top-four finish and a trophy would be a success.

The Reds are currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, but are level on points with third-place Newcastle United with a game in hand. Erik ten Hag's side have won their last eight matches in all competitions and are the only team in England still competing on all four fronts.

United progressed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a victory over Charlton Athletic in midweek, while also making it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after defeating Everton last week.

Hargreaves, who made 39 appearances for the Reds during his time at Old Trafford, is optimistic that his former side can fight for the league title this campaign, but admitted that it would be a 'very good season' if United won a trophy and secured Champions League football for next term.

Discussing United's title chances on talkSPORT, he said: "It’s possible, but I think if Manchester United can win a trophy and finish in the top four, I think that’s a very good season.

"Could they win the league not scoring as many goals as the other top teams? Probably not based on the body of work so far. But they are in a great place, they are the only team left in all four competitions.

"It looks like they can win a trophy. It feels like they are in a good place where they can go and win something, it's been the first time in a long time. The league would be incredible, but finishing inside the top four and winning a trophy would be incredible."

The Reds face Barcelona in a Europa League play-off tie next month, with Ten Hag's side looking to progress to the knockout stages of the competition after finishing second in their group.
