OVO Energy has issued an update regarding an email that is urging customers to apply for a refund.
As October 1 rolls closer and energy rates are set to rise, bill payers will be looking at ways to save cash where they can and a number of people have reported a confusing email has landed in their inbox.
Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "Anyone else just get an email from @OVOEnergy about a refund when you aren’t even an OVO customer?"

To which OVO has confirmed that the refund email has been sent out incorrectly due to a technical issue.
They firm has said: "We're sorry for the confusion this message has caused. This email was sent in error and no refund is being processed. Again, we're sorry for any inconvenience caused, should you need further support from us, please let us know."
OVO explained that historical refund communications have been duplicated, and sent out in error.
On OVO's website, it explains there are some situations where you can request a refund. It adds: "From time to time, you might find that you’ve built up some extra credit in your energy account. At OVO, we call this a positive balance.
"Having some extra cash in your account can come in handy, as energy bills rise and fall. But we understand that sometimes money can be tight – and when it is, you might want to ask for a refund."
You can get a refund if;
- You're moving house
- Switching to another company
- If your positive balance is at least £25 higher than one month’s Direct Debit
This comes just days before the increase of the energy price cap with the Daily charge reaching to 28p for gas and 46p electric and unit rates will reach 10p/kWh gas, 34p/kWh electric. This will bring the average yearly household bill to £2,500.
