‘Overdue’ Lebanon ceasefire must bring lasting solution to crisis, says PM

A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been announced following a day of heavy bombardment in southern Lebanon (Bilal Hussein/AP) - (AP)

The Prime Minister has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, calling for the deal to be turned into a “lasting political solution” to the crisis in the region.

The deal, announced on Tuesday night, will see hostilities between Israel and Iran-backed militants Hezbollah suspended for 60 days, with both sides withdrawing from southern Lebanon.
