Over half of Bristol's care homes reporting Covid outbreaks

Over half of the city's care homes were reporting Covid cases last week, according to the latest data from Bristol City Council.

A total of 52 per cent of care homes in Bristol had Covid-19 outbreaks or clusters as of last Wednesday (January 12).

However, those aged over 60 account for just nine per cent of cases in the city, with a large proportion of cases (46 per cent) being reported among those aged 30 to 59.

The Department of Health and Social Care said protecting care staff and people who use social care services continues to be a "priority".

A spokesperson for the government department said: “Protecting care staff and people who use social care services continues to be a priority, especially as cases surge and Omicron spreads rapidly across the country.

“Throughout the pandemic, we have made almost £2.4 billion in specific funding available for adult social care and this week we announced an extra £60 million to keep people in care homes safe over January.

“We prioritised care home residents and staff for vaccinations, with 80 per cent of residents receiving their booster dose.”

In November, it became compulsory for care staff working with the elderly to be double-jabbed against Covid.

At the time the new rules came into force, Bristol's biggest care provider said it had to stop employing 10 carers as a result of the new Government rule.

A total of 1,006 people tested positive for the coronavirus in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset on Sunday (January 16).

This represented a 16 per cent decrease from Saturday (January 15), when 1,196 cases were reported.

Bristol City Council was contacted for comment regarding the care home cases.
