Over an acre of agricultural land was lost in the Nedumkandam area of high-range district of Idukki in Kerala late on October 23 night in landslips caused by heavy rain, a panchayat official said on October 24.

Besides the agricultural land, a portion of road to the area was damaged due to landslips following several hours of continuous heavy rainfall, the official said.

The incident occurred in the 20th ward of the panchayat, the official said, adding that minor landslips occurred in a couple of other places too.

None injured

However, no one was injured or carried away in the landslips nor were any homes damaged, she said, adding that steps were being taken to clear the debris from the area.

The official said that since the 2018 floods, even minor rain has been causing landslips in the area.

Yellow alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on October 24 issued a yellow alert in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Palakkad districts of Kerala for the day.

A yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm to 11 cm.
