Over a dozen devotees stuck as water level rises in Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh's Omkareshwar

INDORE: Over a dozen devotees taking bath in Narmada at Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh were trapped on the rocks in the middle of the river after sudden increase in water levels on Sunday morning. The youths were safely rescued.

Mandhata police station in-charge Baljeet Singh Bisen said, "Like everyday, Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC) had sounded an alarm before opening the gates of the dam, but the youths did not pay attention. Locals said that they had asked them to come out before the water level rose but they did not listen and hence were trapped on the rocks. They were safely rescued and a major accident was averted."

Bisen said that while six persons were from Maharashtra, five of the youths were from Indore and had reached Omkareshwar to visit the temple. They were taking bath when the incident took place.

Meanwhile, videos of the rescue also went viral on social media soon after the incident.
