Over 530 Glasgow bus lane fines issued to ambulance, fire and police in city centre

Emergency services have been issued 534 bus lane fines for offences in the city centre by Glasgow City Council.

This comes after a Freedom of Information request was submitted to the local authority regarding the penalties issued to the fire, ambulance and police services over the past five years.

Police Scotland received the most, being handed 475 since 2018, the Scottish Ambulance Service were given 46 whilst the fire service received just 13.

When a fire service vehicle is caught in the bus lane the driver is expected to pay the fine.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Any financial penalty received as a result of breaching a designated bus zone is the responsibility of the driver in question, unless the vehicle is travelling under blue light conditions in response to an emergency."

Any penalties handed to police are investigated internally before a report is sent to the council.

Chief Inspector John McCartin, Area Commander at Glasgow City Centre said: “When Police Scotland receives a charge notice regarding one of their vehicles having driven in a restricted bus lane, enquiries are carried out to determine the policing purpose for the vehicle to be using the lane.

“A full explanation is then submitted to Glasgow City Council for their consideration.”

A spokesman for the council said: “The emergency services provide us with a list of vehicles they wish to be exempt from bus lane restrictions.

“Not all emergency service vehicles are included on this list and those vehicles without an exemption will be the subject of fines if bus lane restrictions are breached.

“If it proved to be the case an emergency services vehicle without an exemption was driven in a bus lane while responding to an emergency we would cancel the fine.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
