Lebanese Health Minister Dr. Firass Abiad has reported that over 40 health care workers have tragically lost their lives in targeted attacks this week. These attacks have also extended to ambulances, which are being directly targeted while carrying out their life-saving duties. Dr. Abiad emphasized the importance of protecting ambulances under international law to ensure the safety of medical personnel.
Despite the challenges faced by Lebanon's health care system due to various crises in recent years, Dr. Abiad mentioned that it is currently managing to cope with the situation. However, health care workers are under immense pressure, with some surgeons working continuously for over 48 hours. The shortage of essential medications is also a growing concern, further straining the already burdened system.
Expressing his deep concern, Dr. Abiad highlighted the critical state of the health care system, stating that it is operating at full capacity and is on the verge of collapse. The relentless efforts of medical professionals are being put to the test as they work tirelessly to provide care amidst the escalating challenges.
