Outrageous price of hot dog at Dublin Airport slammed as ‘daylight robbery’

People can’t believe the price of a hot dog in Dublin Airport after an MEP shared a picture of his receipt on Twitter.

Sean Kelly stopped for a bite to eat in the recently opened Tap + Brew craft beer and gourmet hot dog outlet in Terminal One on Monday morning.

He picked up one hot dog and one cup of tea, and his total receipt came to €14.50.

People were particularly outraged by the cost of the hot dog, which was priced at a whopping €12.00.

The MEP for Ireland South and former GAA President shared a picture of the offering online, writing: “How much would you pay for a hot dog ? Well, at Dublin Airport, it will cost you the princely sum of €12 ! Anyone beat that?”

One person replied: “Daylight robbery. I will bring my own sandwiches thank you Dublin Airport.”

“That is excessive. Looking at it, a fiver would be more than adequate,” another said.

A third added: “Well spotted and pointed out - crazy prices there and now they want to charge for drop off ! Dublin Airport needs a train service to city like almost every European city. Many many flights as you know take off 0600 am- so need to arrive 0400- 0430 am , not great bus service.”

Other comments included: “Wouldn’t pay that. Ridiculous”, “This is disgusting”, and “Good old rip off”.

However, others disagreed and said they wouldn’t mind being charged €12 for a hot dog in certain circumstances.

“Maybe it’s just me. But I don’t mind €12 if it’s a great hot dog and side. Not so great if it’s rubbish,” one person said.

Another added: “It’s not the price for me either. It’s just that it looks a bit miserable.”

A third said: “If it's the hot dog place I'm thinking of at the airport, then it's a bit pricey, but the hot dogs are bloody good!”

Dublin Airport recently opened its latest food and beverage offering, in partnership with international food operator SSP.

SSP will operate 24 food and beverage outlets at Dublin Airport, working with Irish brands such as The White Hag, Hugh Maguire - The Smokin’ Butcher, Teeling Whiskey and McCloskey’s Bakery.

Alongside Irish provenance, sustainability is a key feature of SSP’s contract at Dublin Airport. The new outlets also leverage the latest technology, including mobile ‘order at table’ services and contactless menus.

SSP’s bespoke ‘Tap + Brew’ craft beer and gourmet hot dog concept, where Mr Kelly bought his, opened in Terminal One in December.

Speaking at the time, Vincent Harrison, Managing Director at Dublin Airport said: “Delivering the best customer experience and a true sense of place has been the key objective. This is just the first of three phases, which will ultimately see the food and beverage offering at Dublin Airport transformed.

“We want to ensure that our customers enjoy their dwell time at Dublin Airport, and provide them with an opportunity to relax before their flight with a quality dining experience. We are excited to work with SSP to achieve this.”

Over the coming months and years SSP is set to transform the food and beverage offering at Dublin Airport in both landside and airside locations in Terminal One and Terminal Two, incorporating a mix of Irish and international brands and new concepts.
