Outrage as Cornish takeaway charges £2 to add cheese to chips

A chip shop has sparked a huge debate online after being found to charge £2 extra to provide cheese on its chips. Some agree that the fee was unreasonable, but others say it's fair due to rising food prices.

Writing on Reddit, the anonymous poster, with the username u/B0ongLord420, said: "The price to add cheese at my local chippy! A regular cheesy chips with curry sauce cost me £6.40."

Cornwall Live reports that he also shared a picture of the blackboard at the Mariners Fish & Chips on Lower Market Street, Penryn, which stated that a regular portion of chips is £2.90 and a large is £4.90, with the addition of cheese costing another £2 on top. The man did not say how much the curry sauce was, but adding up the other prices it would appear to have been £1.50, MailOnline reports.

Despite the high price, the shocked customer added that the cheese was mature cheddar rather than something more fancy such as brie or camembert. He also said that Mariners Fish & Chips in Penryn has received good reviews online.

One commenter said the takeaway could have put prices up after losing customers. "Everyone is taking the p**s at the moment and I don't know why because all the queues have disappeared from the chippy," they wrote. "Pubs and restaurants are pretty empty, everyone has cut back because of high prices, so they lose out even more in the end!"

However the original poster disagreed, saying: "This chippy is one of the most popular around. If it's open, it's busy. Their main competition also recently closed and have taken their business."

Other Reddit users were shocked by the prices, with one commenting: "What they didn't tell you is the cheese they're adding is a fine brie with cranberry. At that price it would have to be something fancy, or the biggest mountain of cheese ever seen on a cheesy chips."

And another joked: "This is why I always have a pocket full of shredded cheese wherever I go."

But not everyone was shocked by the price, with one person writing: "Cheese, where I live, in Asda is about £2.50/2.70. The price has gone up quite a bit." Another added: "Serves you right for ordering cheesy chips with curry sauce!"

Others shared their own experiences of costly lunches, with one saying it cost them £2.50 to add chicken to a Caesar salad. MailOnline say they contacted Mariners Fish & Chips who declined to comment on the pricing of the chips, cheese and curry sauce.
