Outlander author Diana Gabaldon to be given 'Great Scot' award

Outlander author Diana Gabaldon is set to be given a 'Great Scot' award at a glittering ceremony in New York.

The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA (NTSUSA) is honouring the Outlander creator for her influential work on travel and tourism to Scotland over the past three decades.

The writer will be given the award at the charity's 15th annual fundraising gala on Thursday, April 14 at The Metropolitan Club, which will be "A Celebration of Scotland's Treasures".

Speaking about the news, the NTSUSA posted: "We are particularly excited to celebrate Ms. Gabaldon this year as 2022 has been designated Scotland's Year of Stories.

"The influence of Ms. Gabaldon's work on travel and tourism to Scotland over the past three decades has been extraordinary, and we are delighted to recognize her role in bringing Scottish history and culture to life for audiences around the world."

The show's success, dubbed the Outlander effect, led to a massive boom in tourism for Scotland, with locations that feature in the show, such as Doune Castle, near Stirling, seeing visitor numbers rise by 200% pre-pandemic.

A delighted Diana, who has just released the ninth book in the popular series, took to Twitter to thank the Trust for the award.

She posted: "I'm extremely honoured, and very grateful, not only for the award, but for the good work you do in promoting the interests of Scotland and its culture."

Fans were ecstatic to see their favourite receive some recognition for her work.

One posted: "Congrats Diana, you so deserve it, your passionate heartbreaking but hopeful novels give so much happiness to millions....including me!"

While another added: "You deserve it so much. It's just the reward for a very good job."
