Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has opened up on how the TV show might end, if it doesn't make it to the ten seasons fans are expecting. The popular writer has spoken on rumours that the show might finish before the books.
So far, the programme, which stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as Jamie and Claire Fraser, has matched up with the books, with each season roughly corresponding with a novel from the Outlander series. This has meant there should be roughly ten in total.
However, with the latest season, which is currently filming in Scotland, set to follow the story of 'An Echo In The Bone', Diana confronted the idea that season 7 might even be the last. The popular author was speaking with The Times when she was asked about the end.
“I’m amazed and pleased that it has run for seven seasons,” she responded. “We have had talks with showrunners about potential endings. We came to a few conditional conclusions. But we won’t know until we get further down the road."
Referring to the fact that Starz had yet to green light an eighth season, and rumblings that it might be hard to keep the show's stars for three more seasons after both Sam and Caitriona have been courted by other projects, Diana added: "We keep our fingers crossed. It’s rare for a hit series to go that long."
Stating that getting an eighth season would be "totally great", she added: "If we don’t get a season eight, then the seven we have are really good, and we can contrive a reasonable ending if that should be the case."
So it seems that she is hopeful for an eighth season but in typical Diana fashion is being entirely pragmatic about the idea it might be the end before then.
However, one thing is for certain, unlike her friend George RR Martin, she is well on course to finish the tenth book before the show even gets anywhere a tenth season.
“But I am well ahead of them at the moment," she added. "So, I don’t think they’re going to catch me up.”
