Outlander at Preston Mill - the little known location used to film famous water wheel scene

It's one of the most intriguing looking but lesser-known Outlander filming locations.

The historic Preston Mill, in the village of East Linton, doubled as Lallybroch's Mill in the first series.

The stunning building with stone walls and Dutch-style orange pantiled conical kiln roof is considered to be one of the oldest working grain mills in Scotland.

Situated on the River Tyne, just over 40 minutes in the car from Edinburgh, it dates back to the 18th century and is popular with amateur photographers and local historians.

The mill is incredible to see up close and really transports people back a few centuries to a more charming idyllic and rural time.

In the Outlander season 1, episode 12 called Lallybroch, the mill at Jamie's home is broken and as the laird, he won't leave it unmended.

However, during his attempt to fix it, the Redcoats arrive and he is forced to hide underwater while Jenny and Claire satisfy the soldiers’ questions.

It's a close call and is also the first time Jenny is exposed to Jamie's scars and learns what her brother has had to face.

History

The current building dates back to the 18th century and consists of a kiln (with its conical roof), a mill, and the miller's house.

Used commercially until 1959, it was the region’s last working watermill, it's now run by the National Trust for Scotland, still has all of its working components and is now a small museum.

The mill was the focus of an appeal in 2019, and thanks to generous donations from NTS members and the public, the charity was able to repair the waterwheel to allow it to turn once more.
