Central and eastern Kentucky is feeling the heat, with highs forecast for the mid- to high-90s all week. The high temperatures are more than an inconvenience for people who have to work outside – they can lead to heat stroke or death. Tim Cox will spend much of his week replacing sidewalks for the Versailles Public Works Department.
“We're pulling out some sidewalks today trying to get the trips, hazards removed, and so on so forth.”
“How are you guys going to cope with the heat not just today, but all week?”
“Do our best to stay hydrated. Don't overdo it. Just take your time. And take a seat when you need be.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 700 people die from extreme heat each year. Cox said he and his colleagues are ready to beat the heat without risking their health.
“Thursday is looking to be our worst. Today's percentage of humidity I think is 83% So we're gonna do the best I can trust to stay cool and not overdo it for sure.”
Cox said his boss, Public Works Director Bart Miller, makes sure his employees have chilled Gatorade or water.
