Outdated South Ayrshire CCTV cameras given upgrades to provide high resolution images

CCTV cameras across South Ayrshire have been upgraded with the ability to capture crime in 4K resolution.

A major £400k revamp has seen 47 outdated analogue cameras boosted to provide crystal clear footage of what’s going on in the region's streets.

It means that all 82 public space CCTV cameras across the local authority are now fully digital.

Cops will have access to the new crime-fighting tech which has been upgraded in Ayr, Prestwick, Troon Maybole and Girvan.

The overhaul will also see ten mobile cameras being made available which can be utilised for large events or relocated to different communities.

Council chiefs have worked with Police Scotland on the upgrades (South Ayrshire Council)

And council chiefs have confirmed they will return to manned CCTV stations, where staff will keep tabs and alert police of any ongoing incidents.

It comes after fears were raised that unmanned stations could give criminals a ‘head start’ after the hub at McCalls Business Centre was left abandoned last year.

But now council chiefs have promised that crews will monitor the new devices, with police also having access remotely.

Councillor Martin Kilbride said: "It's fantastic news that these cameras are now in place. All 82 public space CCTV cameras are now fully digital and provide excellent image quality.

“I am delighted that the live monitoring of the cameras has been reintroduced, this is a great example of partnership working."

Kenny Dalrymple, Assistant Director - Housing and Operations said: "This project is an important part of our South Ayrshire Way Strategic Change Programme which seeks to improve services and communities.

“I have no doubt these cameras will help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. To the vast majority of people these cameras will be a reassuring presence."

The cameras were installed by CCTV and surveillance systems specialists North, they will also maintain the cameras.

Senior police officers have praised the upgrade which they hope provide a boost in catching criminals.

Inspector Ian McColl from Police Scotland who have been involved throughout the project added: "We welcome the upgrade of the public space CCTV for South Ayrshire.

"It is a valuable asset in ensuring people feel safe within our communities and in assisting with police investigations into any incidents which do occur."
