'Our Lions are representing us abroad but should feel safe for their loved ones at home'

England’s World Cup squad and their loved ones will hopefully be reassured by increased security back home after raiders targeted Raheem Sterling’s house.

Sterling was forced to miss Sunday’s game against Senegal to fly home to his traumatised fiancee and children.

Captain Harry Kane’s level-headed leadership is just what England players need at such a time, because as manager Gareth Southgate is aware, distractions back home are the last thing they need ahead of Saturday’s showdown with world champions France.

Anyone who has ever been burgled will sympathise with the Sterling family’s anguish.

And as England fans dare to dream of World Cup glory, the intruders are public enemies.

From the richest to the poorest, no one should feel insecure in their own home.

A brave start

Cleaning up Tory sleaze and giving power to the people are noble causes.

Labour’s last Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Keir Starmer, set to be its next, know people want more control over their lives.

Labour’s bold 40-point plan would be a brave start – from leaving key decisions to local communities and shifting 50,000 civil service jobs out of London to replacing the House of Lords with a smaller, democratic second chamber in Parliament.

Yet sidestepping the issue of electoral reform and fairer votes is a gaping hole in the report and cannot be ignored forever.

Trailer clash

Using images from media scrums around Katie Price at court and Donald Trump’s disgraced lawyer in New York is an odd way for trailers for Harry and Meghan’s upcoming Netflix series to claim she was a victim of a hierarchical Royal Family.

If it’s a dirty game and there was a battle in Britain, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex assert from their new life in California, then neither side appears to possess clean hands or to be revealing the full truth.
