Ospreys coach quits for personal reasons

Ospreys attack coach Brock James is leaving the region at the end of the season.

The Australia-born former fly-half was Toby Booth’s first appointment after he took charge in 2020, with James signing a three-year deal.

He’s departing a year earlier than expected to rejoin his young family in New Zealand.

“This has been a really hard decision,” said the 40-year-old, who linked with the Ospreys after a stellar playing career with Clermont Auvergne.

“With my family in New Zealand I have decided to rejoin them there. I am grateful to Toby for giving me the opportunity to be part of the Ospreys’ journey and I have loved working with the region’s players and staff.

“I really appreciate how hard everyone has worked and the foundations that have been laid for the future.

“My focus now is on a strong finish to the season and seeing the Ospreys maintain momentum in the United Rugby Championship.”

James had a reputation as a visionary fly-half for Clermont, helping them to European Challenge Cup final success in 2007 and the Top 14 title in 2010.

Injuries have hammered the Ospreys during his time in Swansea and they have particularly missed George North behind the scrum this season, but they qualified for the Heineken Champions Cup last term and currently stand sixth in the United Rugby Championship table.

He is leaving with Booth's blessing, with the team boss at the Swansea.com Stadium believing the popular and respected James will eventually resurface in New Zealand as a coach.

The Ospreys’ head coach said: “We are disappointed to see Brock leave but totally understand his reasons for deciding to put his family first.

“His commitment throughout his time here has been exemplary.

“His honesty, integrity and deep knowledge of the game have been a huge benefit to myself, his fellow coaches and the players. I look forward to seeing him continue his coaching career in New Zealand.”
