Oscars 2022: Kenneth Branagh breaks record as Belfast bags seven nominations in seven categories

Kenneth Branagh's Belfast picked up seven Oscar nominations across seven categories this afternoon.

The nominees were announced in a live ceremony today, hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan.

The black-and-white film, inspired by Sir Kenneth's childhood in Northern Ireland, was tipped to be an Oscar favourite when it premiered at film festivals last year - and it has risen to expectations.

The film received seven nominations in total: Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench), Best Sound, Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Branagh), Best Supporting Actor (Ciaran Hinds), Best Song ('Down To Joy' by Van Morrison, Best Director (Kenneth Branagh), and the Oscars' most coveted award, Best Picture.

Among the achievements for the film, Kenneth Branagh also personally broken a new record at the Oscars. He is the first person to have receiving seven nominations in seven different categories throughout his career.

In the Best Picture category, Belfast will go up against Coda, Don't Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story.

Ciaran Hinds will go up against The Power Of The Dog's Kodi Smit-McPhee and his co-star Jesse Plemons, Troy Kotsur for Coda, and JK Simmons for Being The Ricardos.

Elsewhere, Dame Judi is nominated for the best supporting actress prize alongside Irish actress Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter, Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard, and Kirsten Dunst for The Power Of The Dog.

Van Morrison was nominated alongside Billie Eilish (No Time To Die), Beyoncé Knowles-Carter & Darius Scott (King Richard), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Encanto) and Diane Warren (Four Good Days).

In the Best Original Screenplay section, Kenneth Branagh was nominated with Don’t Look Up (Adam McKay & David Sirota), Licorice Pizza (Paul Thomas Anderson), King Richard, and The Worst Person in the World.

In the Best Director category, he's up against Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza), Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), Steven Spielberg (West Side Story), and Drive My Car (Ryûsuke Hamaguchi).

In the Best Sound category, Belfast will compete with Dune, No Time to Die, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

The Oscars Award Ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 27.
