Stars of the original Good Times are sharing their thoughts following the release of the trailer for Netflix's upcoming animated reboot. The original series, which premiered in 1974 and celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, focused on the Evans family in Chicago, portraying a realistic depiction of a working-class Black family over six seasons.
After the debut of the first promo for Netflix's animated reimagining of the Evans family, some fans expressed concerns about the portrayal of stereotypes, such as a drug-dealing infant, diverging from the positive themes of the original show.
Original cast members John Amos and BernNadette Stanis, who played key roles in the original series, shared their reactions to the trailer. Both actors emphasized the need to reserve judgment until they have seen the new show in its entirety.
Amos highlighted the high standard set by the 1970s series, making it challenging for newer projects to match its quality. Stanis mentioned that the use of the same name for the animated reboot might lead to confusion among fans expecting to see the original cast front and center.
Stanis revealed that she and fellow castmate Jimmie Walker were approached to voice minor characters in the animated series. She expressed surprise at the direction of the show but understood the decision to include them to maintain a connection to the original.
The animated Good Times, set to premiere on April 12, boasts a star-studded voice cast including J.B. Smoove, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jay Pharoah, Marsai Martin, and Gerald Slink Johnson. The show, executive produced by Norman Lear, Stephen Curry, and Seth MacFarlane, aims to offer a fresh take on the classic series while retaining themes of family, resilience, and social commentary.
Yvette Nicole Brown defended her involvement in the project, stating that while the new show may be edgier and more irreverent, it still centers on family, challenging the system, and striving for a better future, aligning with her values.
