Organisers of Dumfries and Galloway appeal for items to help Ukrainians call a halt to donations

Organisers behind an appeal for items for Ukrainians fleeing into Poland from the Russian invasion have called a halt to donations.

Annan’s Mary MacRae launched the plea at the Ukrainian Chapel at Hallmuir camp near Lockerbie last week and has been “absolutely overwhelmed” by the volume of goods donated.

She said: “It has snowballed beyond anything I could imagine.

“Thank you so much to everyone who gave items and all the businesses and volunteers who have been involved.

“We cannot take any more goods as we have to now work on getting all the items over there.

“We planned to store everything in a barrack on site but that is packed full and so now is our chapel and a bus which our neighbours, McCall Coaches Ltd, have loaned us. It is unbelievable.”

Another member of the region’s Ukrainian community, Dumfries’ Peter Kormylo, who has been in Edinburgh and London since the invasion raising awareness and support for the country, said: “It is incredible the support that has come from Dumfries and Galloway.

“We had planned to have a Mass for Ukraine in the Chapel on Sunday with the Ukrainian Bishop of London coming up for the service but I have had to cancel that now because no one will be able to get into the chapel for all the boxes of donated items.

“I hope people will pass the message on that it is cancelled for now.”
