BENGALURU: The state government on Friday took the ordinance route to amend the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Act, 2020 to ensure that the reservation matrix in the civic body’s elected council does not exceed 50% as ruled by the Supreme Court previously.
The 2020 Act had capped the reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) at 33%.
The ordinance promulgated on Friday after obtaining assent from governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot read, “One third of the total number of seats to be filled by direct election in the corporation shall be reserved for persons belonging to the backward classes. Further, the backward classes under this sub-section shall not exceed 50% of the total number of seats in the corporation.”
Former mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun said, “This will strengthen the prospects of the backward classes while contesting polls.”
