Met Eireann has upgraded a weather warning to a status orange alert for 16 counties.
The alert is in place from 11pm on Thursday until 7am on Friday, with rain and thunderstorms set to cause dangerous conditions across the entirety of Leinster, as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Tipperary and Waterford.
The upgrade comes after the weather experts had issued a status yellow alert on Thursday morning for rain.
The new alert, which the forecasters issued moments ago, reads: "Heavy rainfall with embedded thunderstorms likely to cause flooding."
The full forecast for Thursday evening isn't looking good either.
Met Éireann says: "Blustery tonight with rain becoming widespread, heavy in places with the chance of embedded thunderstorms and flooding, especially in the east. Rain will become confined to the north and east of the country later in the night.
"Lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty south to southeast winds, veering southwesterly later. Gales are expected for a time along eastern and southeastern coasts."
Things don't get much better on Friday.
The forecast reads: "A wet and blustery start in the north and east on Friday with heavy rain and some flooding. Drier and clearer weather in the south and west along with a few showers will extend to all areas during the morning.
"The remainder of the day will bring a mix of sunshine and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17C in mostly moderate southwest winds, fresher in the southwest and west."
