'Optical illusion' cycle lane leads to barrage of injury claims

A cycle lane described as an "optical illusion" has led to 59 injuries after cyclists keep falling over when they are using it. The figures, relating to a high street cycle lane, have been obtained through a Freedom of Information request.

A new cycle lane was opened in the Somerset town of Keynsham in March last year after nine months of work, and has sparked an odd phenomenon of people falling over. The lane has been described as an “optical illusion” because there are kerbs and painted white lines that looked similar to each other.

Somerset councillor Alan Hale, who obtained the figures from Bath and North East Somerset Council, warned that someone could suffer fatal injuries on the road, SomersetLive reports. A total of 21 people have pursued personal injury compensation claims against the council in relation to the road.
