AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam on Wednesday called for the enactment of a proper law to ban online games.
He recalled that in August 2021, the Madras High Court struck down the Tamil Nadu Gaming and Police Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, that banned online games such as rummy and poker with stakes. But the court made it clear that the legislature would be at liberty to bring in a law for regulating online games. “So far, it is not known whether the State government has enacted a fresh law or gone on appeal against the judgment,” he said.
The AIADMK leader gave the background on the 2021 law and said that though all lotteries were banned in 2003, youngsters were getting addicted to online games. He referred to recent advertisements in sections of the media on online games and expressed concern over reports of the youngsters getting attracted towards them.
In a series of tweets, AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran urged the government to hire those who completed courses in physical education and registered themselves with employment exchanges for 20 years on the basis of seniority. As a number of posts of physical education teacher were lying vacant, it was not proper to hold written tests for candidates who were essentially sports players, he said.
