The gruesome assault occurred while Lee Jae-myung was touring a new airport construction site in the coastal city of Busan. Speaking to reporters on camera, he was unexpectedly approached by an individual described by the police as a man in his 60s. This person ostensibly requested an autograph but swiftly launched a violent attack with a knife, causing severe damage to Lee Jae-myung's neck.
