Oppo Reno 8 Pro review: An mid-range powerhouse that can contend with pricier flagship smartphones

Oppo has released a string of successful products over the past few years which has allowed them to go toe to toe with household industry names.

Early this year Oppo launched their flagship smartphone the Find X5 Pro which showcased what the Chinese tech giants are capable of.

With Oppo already proving they can compete with other flagship products, they have set their eyes on the rest of the market with the release of the Reno 8 Pro.

As one of the latest generations of Oppo’s Reno range, the 8 Pro looks to grant flagship performance at a much lower price.

The Reno 8 Pro is larger than most smartphones measuring 16.12 x 7.42 cm with a thickness of 7.34mm.

It's a little wider than the Find range, however, the smartphone is lighter weighing 183g. It has an aluminium frame and glossy glass back which combine for an elegant and premium look.

Its sleek body comes in two colours, Glazed Green and Glazed Black, they both look stunning, but my only issue with glossy smartphones is that they can get scratched and scuffed much more quickly than ones with a matte finish.

The Reno 8 Pro feels great when holding but can be a little slippery when holding and slides off surfaces if not angled properly and sadly Oppo hasn’t included a case.

The Reno 8 Pro has a massive 6.7”, AMOLED screen which is great for streaming movies and playing games. It has extra thin bezel edges that boast a large 93.4% screen-to-body ratio which is great for playing games.

With a 394 PPI display that supports HDR10+, images are bright and colourful, this may be lower than most flagship smartphones, but it's great for its pricing.

The display’s peak brightness is rated at 900 nits which is good for everyday use but still pales in comparison to other smartphones of the same tier.

The screen comes with a 120 Hz refresh rate, this makes movement while using apps much more smooth. Its screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, keeping it safe from scratches and damages.

The Reno 8 Pro is built with a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX processor which is comparable to the Snapdragon 888. It runs multiple apps smoothly but struggles slightly with heavy gaming.

This model features 8 GB of Ram and 256 GB storage which is in line with most phones from the same price range.

The Reno 8 Pro runs on Oppo’s operating system, ColorOS 12.1 which is similar to Android 12 but it will be getting ColorOS 13 later this year.

For now, the ColorOS 12.1 is a really dependable operating system that provides an easily accessible UI with great privacy tools and an intuitive biometrics system.

Oppo is known for its great cameras, setting a high bar with what was available on the Find X5 Pro.

The Reno 8 Pro comes with a triple rear camera that includes a 50Mp main lens, an 8Mp ultrawide lens and a 2Mp macro lens. The main camera features a 50MP lens, that utilises a Sony IMX 766 sensor which are excellent features to elevate your pictures.

The processing power has been improved due to the new Oppo’s self-produced MariSilicon X Imaging NPU chip allowing for better low-light shots.

It's build with a triple rear camera much like Oppo's other phones (Oppo)

The Reno Pro 8 main camera looks gorgeous in daylight with bright colours and excellent details. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality during night shooting with very little noise and grain.

The Ultra Angle and Macro lenses are decent extras, however, their quality is a little below what’s available within the same price range. They are suitable for casual pictures but I found myself opting to use the main camera as much as I could.

That being said the front camera is a 32MP camera that is the same as the one found in Oppo’s flagship phones and works a charm allowing for adequate selfie shots with nice colours and sharp images.

The camera also allows for great video options that even include 4K at 30 and 60fps which is superb.

I was really impressed with the 4K quality that offered excellent detail, great colours and contrast with little grain.

The Reno Pro 8 has fantastic video capabilities that make it one of the best within this price range. I was impressed with the phone's slow motion and time-lapse mode, which were superb when testing.

The Reno Pro 8 has a 4,500mAh battery which supports Oppo’s SuperVooc technology allowing for super fast charging. It currently doesn’t have any wireless charging which is becoming much more common within smartphones at this price range but that’s not a deal breaker.

Verdict 4/ 5

The Reno Pro 8 is another stellar smartphone from Oppo’s illustrious roster of products. Even though its specs are slightly stripped back, Oppo has crafted an excellent smartphone that can go head-to-head with some of the more expensive flagship phones.
