Visit the Parthenon sculptures in the British Museum’s Duveen Gallery and you will be transported back to the mythic majesty of the Athenian Acropolis in the fifth century BC. Sculpted in the age of Pericles, Sophocles and Euripides, the reliefs – also known as the Elgin marbles – depict a procession celebrating the birth of Athena.
You will see battles between the centaurs and their human enemies, the Lapiths; images of gods and heroes; chariot teams and the bearers for a great feast. The frieze is a portal in the very fabric of time.
