How do you solve a problem like Matty Healy? It’s something Taylor Swift’s loyal legion of fans has been pondering for months.
The swaggering, chaotic 1975 frontman (and son of sometimes Loose Woman, Denise Welch) has had Taylor’s ‘Swifties’ all riled up. After her shock split with unassuming, calm, handsome actor Joe Alwyn, Swift leapt head first into the arms of pretentious showman Matt Healy.
For some, Healy is the sort of sleazy star the sanitised world of rock has been missing. He smokes and guzzles wine on stage, snogs his fans, sucks their thumbs, kisses security guards, eats raw meat (not quite a live bat, but he tries) and mouths off constantly. He’s a wild man.
People seem to love him or loathe him. The problem is Swift’s fans really loathe him. They’ve dug up old footage of him appearing to do the Nazi salute on stage and dredged up clips of him appearing to laugh hysterically as host Adam Friedland made a series of racist jibes on his podcast — which has now been removed from Apple and Spotify. He since apologised. “I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of sorry if I’ve offended you,” he said during one of his shows in New Zealand. For Swifties, he’s just no good for their girl.
Happy news then that after two months the pop goliath has called time on her relationship with the “f**king slack-jawed f***wit” (Noel Gallagher’s words, not mine). A source, has apparently said: “She had fun with him, but it was always casual.”
