The furious response to their proposed welfare cuts seemed to come as a shock to this government. But, perhaps emboldened by his success on the Ukraine issue, Sir Keir Starmer has made it clear that he intends to plough on with his cuts.
Today the Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall came before Parliament to spell them out. She often seemed very passionate. But, in reality, it was quite performative. Had she showed more genuine passion in protecting men and women from the welfare cuts, hundreds and thousands of people would not be so frightened today.
