Most pregnant Americans did not receive the RSV vaccine designed to protect newborns during its first year of use. A new international review estimates that only about 27% of pregnant people in the U.S. were vaccinated in that first year, one of the lowest rates among the countries studied, according to a News-Medical report on the review.
The timing matters. RSV season typically starts in the fall, and the virus is a leading cause of hospitalization in babies. Parents expecting a child in the coming months have two main ways to protect the baby: a vaccine during pregnancy or an antibody shot for the newborn.
